Hello!

As you may be aware that the 7th Asia Pacific Games will be held at Seoul, Korea from 19 – 26 May 2012, Deaf Sports Australia is keen to send sports teams that are included at the Games. To view the sports being held at the Games, go to www.seoul2012.com for details. Please note that two non-Deaflympic events have been included and they are, Baseball and Futsal.

As part of gauging interest in these Games, I have attached the Expression of Interest form for you to distribute to your network contacts. All athletes and officials who are keen to participate at the Games will be required to submit their EOI. Please note, that submitting EOIs does not guarantee selection in the Australian Team, however if an athlete or official is not selected by their National Deaf Sports body, they will be able to receive their refund after payment has been made.

The attachment outlines the purpose of the EOI and the processes involved. It is important to note that the closing date for the EOI forms to be submitted is FRIDAY 19th AUGUST 2011.

Should you have any questions regarding the EOI, please do not hesitate to contact me at DSA via email on irena.farinacci@deafsports.org.au

friday 27th may 2011-Smart Auslan for National Sports Muesum

Australian Communication Exchange (ACE) had launched the Smart Auslan for National Sports Muesum in Melbourne which Deaf and hearing impaired people can now view the Auslan-interpreted or to read caption or to listen the audio commentary. Well done, ACE!

Here's the Media Release from Phil Harper.

Dear friend,

I’m writing to let you know about a major breakthrough in accessibility to museum audio tours - the launch by the Australian Communication Exchange (ACE) of its new Smart Auslan service. Deaf and hearing impaired visitors to the National Sports Museum in Melbourne can now receive an Auslan translation as well as captions for all exhibits that have an audio commentary.

Visitors can either pick up a pre-loaded handset from the museum counter or download the application free to their Android phone via www.smartauslan.com.au. When the handset is pointed at the Quick Response code on the exhibit, the device plays an Auslan video translation with captions (see below).

Brent Phillips, President of Deaf Sports Australia, was a guest speaker at the launch and explained how this exciting innovation will allow Deaf and hearing impaired people to enjoy the National Sports Museum fully at any time.

The first Deaf and hearing impaired people to try out the Smart Auslan service were amazed by its ease of use and delighted that exhibits can now be brought to life. Click here to view a YouTube video of the launch and information on Smart Auslan.

The National Sports Museum is open 7 days a week and welcomes Deaf and hearing impaired people, school and community groups to visit their wonderful and accessible sporting displays as well as see the MCG.

For more information on the Smart Auslan service, contact ACE by phoning 1300 133 968 or emailing info@smartauslan.com.au for more information. Smart Auslan is just one ground breaking service to be followed by a number of other major applications launched by ACE later this year.

As a valued friend, ACE would be very interested in your feedback on this exciting service. Please pass this information on to your networks.

Regards

Phil

Thursday 12th May 2011 - Result of DEaf Bushwalking Day

Written by Glen Flindell

"Eighteen enthusiastic deaf bushwalkers turned up for the DSRV bushwalking event at Westerfolds Park in Templestowe despite wet weather being forecast. We were lead by our experienced bushwalking guide Mick who took us along both designated tracks and less well-trodden paths.

Unfortunately an interpreter never showed up so there wasn’t a high level of communication between the leader and the group however Mick was able to get his point across where necessary and provided us with a map. The walk saw us come in close contact with the local wildlife including some rather colourful birds and as we crossed bridges some interesting objects were observed below in the river such as abandoned lawn mowers.

We also came across an Aboriginal Art Gallery where some of us mastered the didgeridoo and created our own music. We admired some impressive paintings and items that were on sale by various local Aboriginal artists.

Overall it was an enjoyable 3.5 hours of recreation and all participants would like to see further bushwalks conducted in the future."
